Wow! The book sounds like a terrific story. Can't wait to begin reading it with my class.

I love meeting authors, too. It makes the book so much more real. I was in a middle school teacher in NN for three years before coming to teach in Hampton. I used to help read books and make questions (150+) for the librarian and students who participated in Battle of the Books. I read a lot of great books, but my favorite was FREE BASEBALL, I had an opportunity to meet Sue Corbett (?) last year at the Reading Council Dinner, and unfortunately had not read the book yet when I met her. If I ever meet her again....I can tell her how much I loved it!

Just an idea....as a Pre-Reading activity, I think I'll have my 9th graders do preliminary Internet research on the Polio Epidemic of 1944. (Think I need to do some myself : )

I also met Sue Corbett and had read the book Free Baseball. It was really good and it is neat to see why authors choose to write books.

Blue seems to be a very interesting story. We are reading it in our English class, and even the boys seem to like it.

Mrs. Terrell, Hi, this is Stephen. Thank You for responding to my Blog. Today we defined polio and are doing internet searches to get more information about it. I don't know anybody personally that has polio, but I know FDR had polio when he was president.

Hello Justin,
It is sad when family member have to go off to war. My boys were very little when their dad when off to war. They were really too young to understand. Keep reading!

Hello Stephanie,
I enjoyed reading your comment about "even the boys are reading it". Finding books that are interesting and keep your attention are sometimes difficult to find. Everyone has different interests. I really like historical fiction, which this book is because it makes you feel like you are in that time period. I can't imagine what it would be like to have polio and not be able to walk. How do you think that would affect you?

I find it interesting to read about other people's lives. Even though Blue is fiction, it is based on the lives of so many people who lived during that time. We can look into their lives and feel what they must have felt. We can learn to empathise with others when we feel what they feel. And we can also learn to be thankful for our own lives.
